Challenge:  Smells card, I21 - Meat
Author: Azalais
Title: Horror in the Halls of Stone
Character: Beregond
Format: Drabble
Rating: PG

Summary: Eyes that fire and sword have seen, And horror in the halls of stone...

Horror in the Halls of Stone

The white wizard commends him; the King pardons him; his lord and captain whose life he saved embraces him. Yet even far from the City in the peace of Emyn Arnen, it will be long before Beregond's free of the bad dreams...

Blood, blood of his fellows spilt by his blade, pooling on Rath Dinen's hallowed steps. The crackle and roar of the flames, the wave of heat, the thunder as the House of the Stewards collapses behind them into dust and ashes. And always, at last, turning his stomach even over the acrid smoke... the smell of roasting flesh.

*gives Beregond a glass of warm milk*

Excellent; very atmospheric.

Perhaps not the vision of the Dad operating the grill behind the garage that is so prevalent in my society today :-)

Meep! One can almost imagine poor Beregond becoming a vegetarian.

I've always imagined that afterward Pippin at least could not bear the scent of burnt meat. Yes, it would be much the same for Beregond. Excellent drabble!

Ooh, nice! And what a last line, poor guy.

(Incidentally, it's probably stuff like this which is the reason I can't seem to leave the Siege of Minas Tirith--PTSD for everyone!)

ahh the smell of crispy critters come rain or come shine.
My family had a rampant bbq'er.
It firmly shoved me toward vegan.
My heart goes out to Beregond for his suffering.
