Grasp, by Elleth

B2MeM Challenge:
N36: Evil, Villains and Monsters: Gollum; Second Age: One Ring
Format: Poetry
Genre: General
Rating: Teens
Warnings: Standard dose of Silm/LotR-type doom and death
Characters: Sauron, Isildur, Deagol, Smeagol
Pairings: N/A
Summary: The One Ring, from its making to Gollum.

Willing metal-melting into shape of gold, precious,
Hands will hold firm – all in it power, all his.
Tempting doom is folly for any of wisdom:
Fate's quick to punish.

Rolling river-downward into silence long past
Grasping hands that reach vainly – for eyes dim:
Death and blood weave darkness into the fate of
Gondor's lost High-King.

Sinking years-countlessly into mud long past
Memory, 'til hands, grasping elsewhere – fish – find,
groping, a ring, golden and so precious, never to
Let go, though doom come.

Doom is swift to strike. Around Deagol's neck
Grasping, groping, hands that will squeeze – for gold ring -
Friend's life out, he will not keep the precious.
Smeagol is no more.

Oh, how perfect a look at the Ring that Sauron wrought and Its victims!
