It pretty much sucks to be Aragorn right now. But you have to imagine they've run through this scenario before - it's the life they lead. Which doesn't mean it is any less awful, but it may mean that they're much better prepared to confront that reality than, say, me (who wouldn't have made it past the door wouldn't have made it out of Ranger training class).
