Most of the ideas concerning the Hwenti proper actually grew somewhat organically out of canon material about Dorwinion and working with the existing wordlist of Primitive Elvish in order to work out the language (which in turn was a decision strongly influenced by Tolkien's idea that Sindarin had spread all the way to Dorwinion - I read that and went 'nope', at least insofar that it seems to have referenced its use as first language), and the rest came from thinking about the history of Rhûn insofar that we know about it, mostly in conflicts with Gondor and the Eothéod in the earlier Third Age, and wanting the East to have similar half-elven legacies without introducing yet more backstory. :D It seems I succeeded in giving them a rich history, at any rate - that comparison is high praise (at least if you enjoy the Silmarillion)!
