My Dear One L,

I may call you that, may I not? We hobbits do dearly love our nicknames, though, bless me, not nearly as much as those First Age elves who changed names more frequently than I change waistcoats.

But I digress. I'm stopping by to say thank you for this wonderful send off you have given me. If I hadn't already given the Red Book to Frodo lad, I would have asked you to write this down in it so I could reread it. But alas, that is a book meant for those who carry on behind us. Frodo has left it with Samwise, who I am told is mayor now in the Shire. Imagine that, my old gardener's son, the mayor! Well, and I'm sure the Gaffer is quite proud, just as I am of Frodo. I'm grateful I do not go off on this final adventure alone, and pray with all my heart that Frodo will find rest in the Blessed Lands.

My heart is full, my lady, you have caused a tear or two to trickle down my cheek with your insightful and vivid descriptions of my last journey through Middle-earth. And I am especially tickled to have learned so much about elven aging. I am leaving here better educated than I ever hoped to be.

I will treasure this memory always.

Yours in Gratitude
Bilbo Baggins
