You know, the thing that this made me think about is that Idril's reason for staying was her animals, who relied on her to take care of them, and whom she would not likely have been able to take into exile. It reminded me of all the people who did not evacuate from Hurrican Katrina because they could not take their pets.

For those of us who love our animals like family, this makes perfect sense, however little it makes to others.
