I just can't see them wanting much to do with the standards and norms of the Valar. To my mind, this would cause the Valar to in some sense equate them with Melkor since he wasn't having any of it either (although of course they lack Melkor's malicious nature), and not be too bothered with their fates.
Glad you liked the friendship. I think I originally had some thought of the narrator's romantic feelings being in some way reciprocated, but very shortly into the story I saw that that was not going to happen with my conception of Goldberry. Guess requited romance and/or sexytimes are just not in my writerly cards!
