I spent far too many hours on Sunday contemplating the Issue Of The Chain. In chapter 2, Frodo pulls the (chained) Ring out of his pocket, and unclasps it before handing it to Gandalf. It COULD mean that he unclasps it from his belt, but since there's no mention of a still-attached chain melting away to nothing in the fireplace, I take this as meaning that the Ring is usually attached to the chain with a clasp, and this is what he removes. But that in itself brings a whole lot of questions...

If Merry and Pippin had managed to get Frodo on board, I'm sure they would have collected every animal in Rivendell and lined them up in size order and tried to insert their paws/hooves/tails through the Ring. But given that the Ring makes its bearers prone to guarding it jealously while hissing "My Precious!" I don't imagine any Ring-bearer would willingly allow their Ring to be bestowed upon a variety of animals of varying sizes, not even For Science. :-D
