The title comes from an old Scottish ballad, "The Water is Wide".
Summary: Elrond, after Celebrian sails.

I Know Not How I Sink or Swim

The days are longer now that she is not here:
around each corner, in every room, I miss her presence.
Others have left me, parents, guardians, brother, king--
none have cut so sharply as this,
have cloven my heart like this.
Yet I still have hope.
The time will come,
I can sail;
she awaits
me.

Somehow this form is particularly apt for the subject. Alas for Elrond now that this one additional loss is heaped upon his shoulders, dragging at his heart!

Thank you! I am finding these dribbles to be a very good way to explore the pairings, some of which I knew little about until I started them.

Elrond endured SO much loss and grief over the millennia. I am sure that at times he envied his brother for being beyond loss and grief, though I do not believe he ever regretted his choice.
