Truly, times of tyranny bring out both the worst and best in people. Nothing is certain - how you'll live, how you'll die, whether you'll be hauled off in the middle of the night. I've read so much 20th century history that these sensations stick fast, and I tried to bring the same vibe, of a country stolen away from some of its people, leaving them behind. I'm glad that came through in the piece.
It was a joy to write Nilûphel! I love characters who aren't necessarily the greatest of heroes, and feel great fear, but still maintain their quiet strength and conviction right to the end. I'm happy her end was fitting. I think she deserved to go out with that power that Sauron could never take from her.
