JRRT would I'm sure have liked this, given the thoughts he gives to Sam about the dead soldier of Harad and his life and home. I do like

One day they would travel the road again. One day they would trade food for spices. One day they would play draughts and cards with their sons and dance with their daughters.

And then the pause before all that must be overcome first... Nicely done.
