Comrades, by Starlight (Éowyn)
B2MeM Challenge: b15 March 3019: The Púkel-Men hold a council; Poetic Forms: Alliterative Verse
Format: Double Drabble
Genre:
Rating:General
Warnings: None
Characters: Dernhelm, OC
Pairings: None
Summary: "There seemed to be some understanding between Dernhelm and Elfhelm, the Marshal who commanded the éored in which they were riding. He and all his Men ignored Merry and pretended not to hear if he spoke." (The Ride of the Rohirrim, RotK)
By the time he noticed Dernhelm had crept closer to the tent, she was almost in full view, among the front ranks of riders clustering about to catch a whisper of Théoden-King's conference with the Wose. Her eyes were riveted on them, on her brother, with an awe mingled with that something else he had never been able to guess, and that shone there brighter of late.
Moving closer, he tapped at her shoulder, gestured for her to follow him, taking her far from the tent, far from notice, as they had sworn.
Sitting side-by-side, he offered his water-skin.
"Wine?" she asked, eyebrow raised, and took another long sip.
"I might as well," he said, and let the rest be silence. Then, slowly, he began the song:
"Hear now the story, stay all your voices
Here comes the tale I tell you today:
Once in the far-flung, fear-filled remoteness
Of Anlaf's hold lived Adda the maid."
She had always loved this story, quickly joined him:
"Adda of the blue eyes, bereaved of kin
Keeper of the hearth, killer of dragons
Adda shieldmaiden, shunning reward
Blessed the poor hands, poured forth her kindness..."
