Crossing the Greyflood (B9)

B2MeM Challenge:  Aspects of Aragorn: Aragorn & Rangers of the North:Eriador (B9)
Format:
Genre: General
Rating: G
Warnings:  None
Characters: Aragorn
Pairings: NA
Summary: Thoughts on returning after a long absence
Authors Notes: Musing on what Aragorn thought as he returned to Eriador

Crossing the Greyflood at Tharbad brought Aragorn back into Eriador after a long absence. It was really coming home for him. For one thing, it meant he could take up his true name again – well amongst the Dúnedain anyway. After many years as Thorongil and the suspicion of the Steward’s Heir it would be good to be among his own people again. Yes, Aragorn was little known in Eriador in the main, but he was amongst the Rangers of the North where he was Chieftain but also a fellow Ranger.  He had decided on his return to Eriador to see to the Dúnedain first rather than visit his childhood home of Rivendell and his mother. This was for a number of reasons, amongst which he was uncertain of his reception by Lord Elrond since he and Arwen had pledged their troth.

However he also needed to reassure his people after his 23 year absence learning about Rohan and Gondor. He did not regret the years away as he had taken the advice of Gandalf to learn about the Southern Realm and its close ally. Now he needed to spend time within the Northern Realm, to ensure that the losses of the last years were not in vain. He needed to become Aragorn, Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North again as opposed to Thorongil, mercenary Captain in Gondor and Rohan. Once he had been to the Angle he would then make contact with the various Ranger Patrols scattered across Eriador protecting unsuspecting, indeed suspicious folk from foes they knew nothing about.

Once he had done all of that he would return to Rivendell and face both his mother and his foster father. He felt that Gilraen feared that the line of Isildur would fail due to his attraction to Arwen and had warned him many years before that Elrond would not easily consent to the marriage of his daughter and a mortal. He knew that this was true and was somewhat reluctant to face both Elrond and indeed his foster brothers. Hence his decision to make contact with his people and resume his duties as Chieftain before he went to his childhood home on his return to Eriador. He would find himself in his guise as Aragorn, and possibly also as Strider the mysterious Ranger, of Breelands and the Wilds, before he found Estel the child who grew up in Rivendell.

An excellent examination of the reasons for Aragorn to go to the Angle first.

Just a note...I think you might have dropped a few words in the 3rd paragraph here:
He felt that Gilraen feared that the line of Isildur due to his attraction to Arwen and had warned him many years before

I haven't seen many snippets written about this time and this was well done. Thank you for sharing

He has reasoned his decisions well. Now, to see them brought to be!
