There’ll Always Be An England

Childhood was a brief golden summer, blighted by his mother’s sudden death. After that came poetry, and the relative obscurity of the second son. A first at Balliol (history). He survived the first war, but scarred, besieged by tumultuous nightmares. Women of a certain type adored him for his cheekbones, the early loss of his mother, his sombre solitude, his kindness. Entering Parliament on his brother’s death, he understood the Nazi threat early. The backbenches beckoned, then vindication under the new PM. And as the bombs hit Dresden, he thought: I am not the man I imagined I would be.

Oh, I love this capsule biography of 20th century Faramir! I am so glad someone did that prompt. Yes, he would have a first in history, wouldn't he?

Women of a certain type adored him for his cheekbones, the early loss of his mother, his sombre solitude, his kindness.

And by women of a certain type, I am sure you do not mean fanfic writers... I love that he has no illusions about the Nazi threat, and the ambivalence of the last sentence. Perfect for statesman Faramir, and for the times in which our parents and grandparents lived (and the times we live now, surely.)

I really wish I'd been able to do more of the Meta prompts. They seem to use a part of my brain that I need right now to get a big project done.

He'd definitely have a first in history. I wonder if he'd rather have read Classics, but his father disapproved.

I usually skip reading the prompts until after I've read the piece but this time I had to read them to understand what you were doing.

I then read this like three times! (not much understanding of British government soooo)

But I did get it; and then started laughing for the image of the New PM, totally losing it to images of Faramir and Churchill and the two of them somehow managing to run the country both during WW2 and afterward.

Probably not what you had in mind, but that's where it went. XD
