At any rate, it wasn't meant to imply disapproval of Feanor's trips of exploration as such, although I'm not sure that isn't what Tolkien is getting at, here. On the other hand, I think "abode seldom in one place for long" has to be an exaggeration or only refer to phases of particular restlessness, don't you? Unless Feanor had a really superlative portable forge.
