"Tell me again about the Rangers."

Aragorn smiled as Frodo gazed plaintively up at him. The little hobbit had been in continual pain ever since Weathertop, and sleep was virtually impossible for him, though at times he drifted along the borders of unconsciousness. But his curiousity remained intact.

"They are my people."

"Are you their king?"

Aragorn was startled by what an astute guesser this small person could be. I should have known, he thought ruefully. Bilbo's heir! "I am their captain," he said simply. "I aid all those whom I can, and I help arrange the patrols."

"Over the Shire, too? I have seen Rangers there, I think. Tall men, simply and plainly dressed, always watching from the shadows of trees. They never talk. But I know they are there."

Aragorn couldn't help but smile again. "That would be my men, yes."

"And they all answer to you."

"Yes."

Frodo closed his eyes and yawned a little. "I think I could sleep now."

"Then try. I shall watch over you."

Frodo nestled down in his blankets. Soon he was sleeping quietly, much to Aragorn's relief.

Looking around at the darkness surrounding them, he wondered what unfriendly ears might be listening, searching for the heir of Elendil in the night.

I liked this very much, a great use of the prompt! I compiled that card and wanted the prompts not to be too narrow!
