The Tunnel

"You don’t need to continue," Erestor assured Glorfindel. "If you're tired I can send someone to find out where you've been assigned for the night."

"I'm not tired yet. Last night I slept in a tent, but the High King assigned me to Elrond, so I assume I'll need a more permanent location."

Erestor stood. "I'll send someone to fetch your belongings. There are empty rooms along this corridor and I'll procure one for you. Tell me your next tale. When you've finished, your new quarters should be ready."

Glorfindel nodded and fell back into his memories while his companion arranged for a chamber. By the time Erestor returned, he had pushed some memories back into their darkened rooms and opened others to look at once more.

"So, when you're ready, I'll show you to your new room. Elrond has requested both of us to attend his morning Council, so we must be at his quarters by one mark after dawn. I'll awaken and guide you."

Glorfindel nodded and softly continued.

"Idril wanted a tunnel. After Tuor entered, proving our seven secret gates were not so secret nor impregnable, she was filled with fear. She was often seen walking the highest walls looking northward at all times of the day and night. Many others may have shared her disquiet, but she was Turgon's daughter, so her fears and desires became our next project."

He shook his head. "I might never have known of the tunnel save she wanted the entrance to be hidden in the stables. One of the back stalls was designated and earthmoving began. I am no dwarf - walking underground, cut off from all light turns my stomach. Yet, when we were overrun and needed to escape, I thanked her fear from the bottom of my heart."

Erestor is a wonderful friend for Glorfindel.

Good thinking on Idrill's part.

I love that it was Idril's foresight that provided the tunnel.

I'm enjoying your interpretation of Glorfindel's story!

Foresight appears to have been one of Idril's gifts, after all. I am glad she insisted on having her tunnel, as a significant few did survive.

Poor Glorfindel, having to deal with many memories he'd rather have left forgotten.

I really like this image. And, once again, I am glad Glorfindel has found someone who is willing to listen to him but allows him to move at his once pace instead of pestering him with questions.
