Summary: Estel is sick and trying to hide it.

For B2MEM 2016, from B2MEM 2012 Hurt/Comfort Bingo Card G50 “warm blankets.”

Maybe if he didn't say anything, no one would notice that he was sick. Elves were observant, true, but Estel had a strong will. If anyone could hide illness in the middle of Rivendell, he could. The key would be avoiding everyone, especially Ada, without being too obvious about it. If Ada caught wind of his illness he'd be stuck in bed for days.

At least he didn’t have a runny nose. That would have been hard to hide. The sore throat and headache didn't give any obvious signs, as long as he didn't cough or rub his temples. He could do this. Maybe. Better not spend too long around any one elf.

Estel decided to go for a ride. It would get him out of the house for a while, with the added benefit of keeping him away from anyone who might notice signs of illness. He headed down to the stables and saddled his horse. (He never did understand why the elves didn't use saddles. Riding bareback made his bum sore.)

"Estel! Fine day for a ride. We will join you." Elladan called out just as Estel was leaving the stable yard. So much for a solo ride. Elladan and Elrohir swiftly mounted their horses (without bothering to use saddles) and met him on the path.

"Where should we go today?" Elladan asked.

"I was just going to ride down through the woods for a ways," Estel said.

"No, that's too boring. Let's go to the river. We can catch some fish for dinner!" Elrohir said.

Estel tried to keep his face neutral. It would take a long time to ride to the river, fish, and ride back. Would he even have enough energy? The roaring and crashing of the river wouldn't help his headache. He couldn't say anything, though, or he risked arousing his foster brothers' suspicions.

"All right. Let’s go."

Estel enjoyed the ride at first. Puffy white clouds showed no sign of rain, and a crisp breeze ruffled his hair. Flowers of many colours bloomed along the path and in the uncultivated areas beyond. Elrohir and Elladan started singing. Not the raunchy songs they sang after too much wine, but merry travelling tunes. He didn’t join them, for fear he’d start coughing, but he smiled at the sound of his brothers’ voices, lilting in perfect harmony. Perhaps having company on his ride wasn't so bad after all.

"Come! Let us catch our dinner!" Elladan said when they reached the river.

Another annoying elven trait---they didn't bother with fishing rods or nets. They simply threw their daggers at the fish, as if anyone could hit a quickly moving creature straight through the heart in one try. Estel had lost many daggers on these expeditions in the past. He had learned to carry a spare, and never to use his good knife for fishing.

"Got one!" Elrohir called.

Already? Must be nice being an elf. Estel half-heartedly scanned for fish. He yawned and bit back a cough.

"Come on, Estel. You can get one, too. Here, you can even use my dagger!" Elladan said.

Estel took the dagger from his brother. Gazing into the river, he spotted a large trout. He aimed, threw...and missed.

"Ah, a little too slow, there. Go get my dagger back and try it again."

Great. Now he had to go into the river. Ah, well, nothing for it.

The water made him shiver. Before he could reach for the knife, the current pulled him underwater, and he came up coughing. And kept coughing. He couldn’t seem to stop.

"Estel! Are you well?" Elladan asked. Estel could not find the breath to answer.

The twins exchanged looks. "I will get the dagger. You get Estel." Elladan said.

A pair of muscular arms encircled his waist. Soon he stood on dry ground again, finally able to breathe without coughing.

"Thank you, Elrohir. I must have breathed in some water when I first got in."

Elrohir gave him a long look. "That was an awfully long fit of coughing. Were you feeling well before?"

Estel gazed at the river to avoid meeting his brother’s eyes. "I am fine."

Elrohir persisted. "You haven't been coughing already today? Any aches? Fever?"

"Elroohiiir, I'm fine. Mortals aren't that fragile, you know."

"Then look me in the eye and tell me you have not experienced any other symptoms."

Estel glanced at his brother, and then lowered his head. His cheeks radiated warmth in stark contrast to the rest of his shivering body.

"It is a pity we brought no dry clothes," Elladan cut in. "Here, Estel, take my over-tunic. I do not need it for the ride home."

Gratefully, Estel took off his wet tunic and under-tunic and put on his brother's tunic instead.

"You will ride with me." Elrohir told his younger brother.

"I'm fine to ride by myself." Estel said.

Elrohir did not listen, and Estel found himself tossed onto his brother's horse without so much as a by-your-leave. Elrohir mounted behind him.

"Close your eyes if you need to, tithen muindor. I've got you."

The ride home seemed far longer than the ride to the river. Estel wished the clouds would part so that the sun could dry out his hair. At least he didn't need to stifle his coughs anymore. That ship had sailed. He sighed. The bouncing and weren’t doing his head any favours. By the time they arrived back at the Last Homely House, being stuck in bed didn't sound quite so bad. Still, he didn't want to be there for too long.

"Please don't tell Ada." He told his brothers.

They stared at him. Oh, well. Worth a try.

"I will fetch Ada," Elladan said. "You get Estel settled."

"I don't need help getting settled. I know the way to my own room!"

The twins ignored him. When they reached his chambers, Elrohir dug through Estel's drawers for nightclothes. He tossed them at his brother and started building a fire. Even though Estel still thought the twins were overreacting, the dry clothes felt nice.

Knock. Knock. Knock. Ada and Elladan came in without waiting for an invitation.

"Estel, son, have you been hiding illness again? We have spoken of this matter before." Elrond put a hand on his foster son's brow, frowning at the heat. "Let's get you to bed." The elf lord pulled back the covers and guided Estel to his pillow. "That's it. Best not to go jumping into rivers when you are ill. Warmth and rest are what you need." He pulled up the covers and kissed Estel's brow.

Estel smiled sleepily at his Ada. “Sorry, Ada. I’ll sleep now.” He curled up further in his blankets and did just that.

This is delightful. Stubborn Estel, but how comforting to be so loved and tended.

Poor lad - and elves always make such a fuss over small illnesses!

Poor Estel--BUSTED! But at least he's in the best of hands, even if he'd wished to avoid them.

Delightful!

Strong and stubborn, but even Estel needed some TLC when he was ill. A loving glimpse of the future King.

Silly kid, trying to hide being ill! Though I imagine his elven family was probably often a little overprotective, being unused to illness themselves.
This is adorable :3
