It Is to Laugh

“T’was a lady who taught her pig to sew. When asked, ‘Where is your white thread,’ she pointed to the needle the pig held and answered, ‘In the pig’s eye’.”

Faramir laughed so hard his eyes watered. “How funny!” he finally gasped to his brother.

“What about it is so funny?” the older youth asked.

At that moment a baker going by with a stack of pies slipped and fell, and the pies splattered on the ground all about the man. Faramir stepped forward to help, to find that his brother was not with him, but was instead laughing hysterically.

When we say "In a pig's eye!", what do we usually mean? And what part of the needle does the thread go through?

"In a pig's eye!" is indeed an idiomatic expression that basically means "It's NOT going to happen!" at the same time it serves as a challenge to "Try and make it happen!" Again, not perhaps the best pun around, but it was the expression that hit my mind as I was trying to think of a more cerebral joke as opposed to the slapstick of the pratfall with something gooey involved.

"Think your dad will let you go?"
"In a pig's eye!"
