Morning arrived too soon. Erestor was knocking on the door as Glorfindel pushed himself off the bed wearily.

"A moment, please," he called to his friend as he reached for the chamber pot. A short time later, he was pulling a comb through his hair as he opened the door to find Erestor standing there, a steaming mug of tea in each hand.

"Here, I'm sure you need this. We had a late night yesterday."

Glorfindel grasped the mug. "Thank you, yes." He took a swallow. "Ummmm, good. What is today's agenda?"

"Elrond wants to meet you at the training grounds. He said to be sure you bring your sword."

The warrior finished his tea, handing back the empty cup. Gathering his sword from the peg next to the door, he tossed his comb onto the unmade bed and walked from the room, fastening the sword belt around his hips.

"Glorfindel," Elrond said, grasping his hand firmly. "Ereinion mentioned your scouting. Today I would like to test your ability to conceal yourself from others. I'll give you a quarter-mark head start. My scouts will attempt to find and capture you. Everyone must return here no later than sunset. Begin … Now!"

So began a game of cat and mouse. Glorfindel loped away from Elrond, heading toward the steep, tree-filled slopes of the valley's protective peaks. A feral smile teased his lips and his eyes gleamed; this was going to be fun. He soon realized that two scouts were good trackers - a young blond elf, and one of the four council members.

At sunset, Glorfindel escorted his two prisoners, wrists tied together, into the clearing. All three were scratched by brambles and sticky with tree sap.

"Your mice, my Lord," he said, tossing the rope to Elrond.

Hah! Good on Glorfi! Too easy for him, I would think...especially since he's Maia-trained! (Or was that just Atto? I'm a bit fuzzy on that...)

I feel sorry for Glorfindel in a way. It is as if Gil-Galad's assessment is not good enough for Elrond; he must set his own tests, rather than saying "Ereinion tells me you are an excellent scout - it would be good to see how your methods compare with ours and where combining both would be to our advantage."

I hope Elrond is suitably impressed now!

Oh, and they were meant to be the cats instead! Lovely how he turned the tables on them.

I have to admit, I feel sorry for Glorfindel too, having to undergo all this tests when he must be used to everyone being assured of his skill as a warrior - then again, he seems to have had a lot of fun here, so I suppose it's not that bad! He certainly turned the game to his favour.
