I can hear objections - how would he know X or Y if the environment was new. I feel that tracking is following clues - whether you know the environment or not. Also, animals tend to have trails and heights, as well as not really caring about breaking specific things to leave trails, so their passage would be more evident. I fully admit that I'm pushing an envelope here that may be ridiculed or not meet the criteria of wood craftsmen world-wide, but I stand by it.
