Silently Steal Away by amyfortuna
B2MeM Prompt and Path: "And the night shall be filled with music / and the cares that infest the day / shall fold their tents like the Arabs, / and silently steal away." Red Path
Format: Ficlet (Triple Drabble)
Genre: Romance
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Characters: Aragorn, Arwen
Pairings: Aragorn/Arwen
Summary: The first moments of Aragorn and Arwen's wedding night.
Sunset was long gone from the city of Minas Tirith, and it was close to midnight when Aragorn and Arwen finally found themselves alone together for the first time as husband and wife. Far below, they could hear, drifting in through the open windows, the faint strains of music still being played, and the sound of joyful merriment from their people.
For one moment they stood, looking at each other, both feeling apprehension for different reasons, emotions so long held in abeyance flooding through their bodies and minds. Then Arwen's face lit up with a smile that sent Aragorn back in memory to days long ago, when as a boy he had called 'Tinuviel!' after the white figure disappearing among the trees. She held out her hand to him, and he knelt before her, taking her hand and kissing it.
"Long was the way that fate them bore," he said, quoting, and her eyes shone with a brightness that bordered on tears.
"Long the way," she answered, "and yet never will the Sundering Seas come between us. Estel, we come now to joy after long sorrow, and rest after labour."
"Sorrow and labour have not yet ceased," he said, "nor ever shall." He rose to his feet, and gathered her in his arms, tenderly, as if she were fragile and might break.
"Here between us now let there be no grief," she answered, "but only music and joy." Raising a hand, she caressed his face softly. "Put your cares away for the night, Estel, my beloved, and let there be joy beyond joy. We will face the day's work at the dawning, together, for all the rest of the days that are granted to us." She drew his head down for a kiss.
And so their marriage began.
