Wraiths of Númenor by LadyBrooke
B2MeM Prompt and Path: Things That Go Bump in the Night - Purple
Format: Ficlet
Genre: Horror
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Disturbing imagery
Characters: OCs (Men of Númenor, Wraiths, Wights), Ringwraiths
Pairings: N/A
Creator’s Notes (optional): Probably not actually what happened in canon. Three of the Ringwraiths were supposed to be men of Númenor, though.
Summary: In Númenor, some men never return. Others do, but changed.
The younger sons of the Lords of Númenor explore the seas and go to Middle-earth to establish their own lands, either out of love of the sea or a burning need to see what is beyond their island like the Noldor of old.
Some of them never return, lost to the sea or battles with the native populations of the larger lands.
Others return only in their old age, or their parent’s old age, wishing to say their last goodbyes or be buried in their own lands.
Still others simply vanish, never to be seen again.
There are some, however, who return when Sauron comes, creeping into the houses of the faithful to spy for him. Sometimes they are wights are made from the dead of the King’s Men and smile from rotting jaws, their families glad they are serving the quest for immortality.
Others are wraiths, or illusions of them, sitting in chairs or standing in the corners of rooms, always there, watching, a constant sign that his spies are everywhere. Sometimes their own mothers sit beside their beds cooing at them about how the King is right, no matter how much they disagreed with him in life.
The three are the worst, however, with swords that make new servants whenever they cut flesh, burning away the body until all that is left is spirit, enthralled into the service of the King and Sauron. They command as they did in life as lords of Númenor, now leaders of the wraiths.
They are his most devoted, and they are not stopped by anything.
