Summary: "And it was said that ever after, if any man looked in that stone, unless he had a great strength of will to turn it to other purpose, he saw only two aged hands withering in flame." (The Pyre of Denethor, The Lord of the Rings)

It was inevitable that he come to Rath Dínen while endeavoring to cleanse the city. No one could have known his feelings upon the occasion, so he came alone, lest they worry.

There, amid the wreckage, he saw it: round, dark, and to all purposes, insignificant.

This was my father's ruin? he thought, and contemplated hefting it. What would he see? T'was said the palantír showed the past--

And the moment passed.

Hands clasped behind his back. He needed no further lesson on the futility of dwelling on what cannot be changed.

Turning, he stepped into the sunlight.

This is so very Faramir--knowing when to turn away from something he can't, or doesn't need to, deal with. I especially like the last line--well done!

Thank you, Aliana!! I'm so glad it worked for you-- drabbles are so tricky, there's so little room! I wonder what they did with that palantír, though, and who tried to use it who saw the withered hands, though *sends plot bunny away*

Thank you! I was debating whether he would be tempted by the palantír or not (after all, he was not tempted by the one ring) BUT I wonder if he thought that it would give him some insight into his father that would provide closure, and then thinking "better let old ghosts lie..."
