B2MeM Prompt, Card and Number: N44 - Russingon Card - watching the ships burn
Format: Double drabble (200 words)
Genre: drama
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Characters: Maedhros, Maglor, Fingon
Pairings: Maedhros/Fingon
Creator’s Notes (optional): I've always thought the scene of Maedhros standing aside as the ships burned and Fingon on the other side, watching them burn, would make an amazing Disney song -- split screen, a lot of singing about feelings. This is the sad come down after the musical number.
Summary: At the sight of something terrible, Maedhros watches.

Maitimo remained on the rocky shore, watching the blackened ribs of the swans ships poke up above the churning water before disappearing once again. The wind whipped at his hair and clothes. When Makalaurë reached him and put a hand on his shoulder, Maitimo flinched away.

“You have to eat,” Makalaurë said, after an awkward beat. “Father says they will turn back when they see we won't return.”

Maitimo said nothing for a long moment. “Do you believe that about our cousins -- our uncles? They will find a way here, no matter what. Father underestimates them.”

“There is no way across -- except the Grinding Ice. And no one would dare --”

“Findekáno would,” he said, with perfect confidence. Findekáno always did.

“Well, yes,” Makalaurë said, exasperated. “He would follow you to the end of the earth, and you would go there too, both of you being idiots.”

“Enough, Makalaurë. I’ve witnessed an atrocity, I have no mood for banter.”

*

Later, when Makalaurë was regaling his cousin -- noticeably wroth -- the tale of how his elder brother had nobly stood aside from the burning of the swan-ships, he took care to leave out this particular conversation.

It added nothing to the tale, he decided.

And Maitimo stood aside. I've always had a soft spot in my heart because he refused to participate in the burning of the ships. Yet another atrocity to be placed at the feet of Feanaro and the Oath. Well done!

A very poignant depiction of this part of the sad story. The dialogue is perfect. I do kind of want to slap Makalaurë for his omission. Thank you for writing & sharing this!
