Summary: Idril survives the Helcaraxë and reaches Middle-earth
She would have been able to detect it, she thought, even by the light of a single star, but in the intense silver glow that bathed them now it stood out plain as anything. Itarillë squirmed in her father's arms and, when that didn't work, had to actually ask him, “Daddy, please put me down?”
She hadn't yet neared her father's immense height, but she was almost as tall as her aunt Irissë and by all accounts too old to be carried around so much. She could not deny, though, how much safer it made them both feel sometimes. Nevertheless, the instant her father gently let her drop, she dashed ahead to claim the treasure that had caught her eye.
Grass. Not snow or ice or freezing water but real ground and real grass. She knelt down and buried her face in it. Before long she was picking at the laces of her fur-lined boots, the knots still half frozen over.
“Itarillë…” her father admonished.
“Please?” she begged.
“Just for a few minutes.”
She freed herself of her boots and her two pairs of stockings and laughed as she felt grass between her toes for the first time in years.
