Summary: Gandalf comes across some strangely delightful people on his travels.

Gandalf was starting to look for a place to spend the night when he heard a loud splash from the river.

“A fish! Bless us and splash us, I caught a fish!”

Gandalf looked at the commotion and saw a funny little fellow splashing about in the water under the willows, holding a fish in his long hands. Mud clinging to his hair, body and surprisingly hairy feet, the little fellow scrambled up the bank. His joy was delightful to watch.

“Grandmother, I caught us something for dinner!”

Only then did Gandalf notice the second person, sitting on a little bench by an opening in the old bank from when the river had followed a different course. She was even shorter than the first person but rather rounder, with curly grey hair covering her head and feet. Of course she had long since noticed Gandalf and was observing him as he watched the little scene.

“Very good. It will make a filling supper, together with some eggs and roots. Fit for company, I deem, which is all the better. Why don’t you ask our guest to join us, Sméagol?”

Gandalf could not wait to get to know these delightful people.

Oh dear. :D Not quite the beginning of a beautiful friendship! Though it's also a little sad to see Smeagol/Gollum when he's still happy and innocent.

A lovely look at Sméagol's life before the Ring. If only it hadn't been found.

Smeagol held few kind thoughts, but his Grandmother made an impression that he recalled to the end of his days. It's too bad her sense of love and hospitality didn't overcome the Song of the Ring.
