Alibi

“Brodda,” the Westfold clan chief introduces himself. Iron-grey plaits and seamed face bespeak hard years herding.

“Call me Ælric,” Aragorn says.

“’Ælric’? Not bad,” Brodda grunts. “Names ent enough, though – you’ve our words, but you ent from the Mark!”

Three months, Aragorn labors to drink down Rohirric’s native rhythm. And where Brodda is exacting, others are demanding – of stories, of outside. He obliges, slowly clothing familiar tales of Fornost and Annúminas in new words, a new lilt, ‘til Brodda declares:

“A leal Westfolder! But one thing’s missing.”

“That is?”

“Half your name! At Edoras, they should call you Ælric Broddasson.”

I don't know what's wrong with me this morning. I'm finding everything I read hilarious.
Can't help feeling some love for Brodda. Terrific description, I can just see him with his 'iron-grey plaits' and 'seamed face'.
'Broddasson'! Great stuff. XD

Now Aragorn has two would-be fathers in Arathorn's place! Love it!

Hooray, an Ælric drabble! Love your description of Brodda, and the way Aragorn labors to drink down Rohirric’s native rhythm. Always a struggle to get the accent just right in a new language. And the last line made me go, "Aaww." That's right. Something you wrote made me go, "Aaww." ;)
