A Story Begun

“You really want this pup, lass?” Sam asked Elanor, hanging over the box where Pippin’s dog lay with her brood.

She looked up earnestly. “Oh, yes, Sam-dad. I’ve always wanted a dog!”

He shook his head. “Folks about the Hill won’t know what t’think of a dog in Bag End.”

“Why didn’t Uncle Frodo have a dog?”

His mouth twitched. “First, dogs made his uncle as raised him sneeze. But it was those dogs of Farmer Maggot’s as chased him off his farm back when Frodo was but a lad still as turned him off dogs for sure. You see, ….”

I hope to meet my own new dog fairly soon, perhaps next week!

Aww, yay!! I'm so glad Elanor is to have a new dog, even though Frodo didn't like them!

And I'm so very glad you have a new dog coming into your life soon too, Larner! Please do tell us when he (or she!) arrives!

Melian is now with Brendi and me, and he loves her dearly. A lot of the uncertainty and fear he expressed after his sister was taken has left him, and he is so happy to have a friend to play with. She is seven months old and already slightly taller than he at the shoulder. She's about reached her full size, and is a pale cream sable as opposed to his orange color or Pandora's black. And if she chews on another book she'll be swatted! Heh!

In my-verse Saradoc was allergic to dogs, and so Frodo didn't grow up around them without knowing why not. Thus, when Maggot's dogs chased him off Bamfurlong it put him off dogs for good, to his detriment.

You're getting a new dog! (dancing in delight). Please post pictures when you get him/her. I adore dogs!

As for the story - it's just sweet. I loved the reminiscence about why there haven't been dogs at Bag End before.

I've loved dogs all my life. I've seen Saradoc as allergic to dogs, so Frodo didn't grow up with them; and in my-verse Bilbo chose not to have pets so as to leave him freer for frequent visits elsewhere throughout the Shire and Buckland, so again Frodo had little chance to counter the fear left him by the chase given him by Maggot's dogs.

I will have to get the pictures of Melian copied to the computer so I can post them. Thanks so!

Oh, Sam would have been the best of dads, I think.

After my Pandora disappeared in January, her brother became very clingy and uncertain, apparently afraid I, too, might disappear as she did. I finally found a breeder in Oregon and brought home Melian two weeks ago. She was answering to her new name immediately, and she and Brendi are now so close. He still likes to sleep on my shoulder to apparently pin me down, but I put up with it gladly, knowing he is no longer alone and happy in his new companionship.

By remaining aloof from dogs Frodo missed out on a good deal of pleasure, I think. But I'm certain Elanor will love her new puppy.

Melian has been with me now two and a half weeks, and she is a dear one if there ever was such a thing. She's still in the awkward adolescent stage. I look forward to her full Pomeranian coat growing in. Brendi adores her!
