Words Spoken too Soon

As lightning and thunder played about Zigûr’s temple, laughing, he mounted to the high seat above the altar where victims were burnt. “You rage against those you once favored!” he shouted. “Did you not raise this island as a gift to those you named Faithful, Wise? Have I not stolen away the last of their wisdom, their faithfulness? Rage away, then! Slay them all with your wrath! For Melkor and I have won!”

Only at that moment the dome overhead cracked as the mountain sank, and the wave poured in to wash away the filth, ashes, and Melkor’s twisted acolyte.

This reminds me quite a lot of Atto Fiondil's "Losing Something Precious", and it would seem Sauron's arrogance hasn't diminished one jot over the Ages. I like this as much as I like that story, and they both give me the shivers (though Atto's makes me laugh, too, while this one's just scary, not funny, to me)

This is what they call "tempting fate" and a perfect example of why it's a stupid idea!

I liked this--very dramatic. I could see Sauron feeling triumphant over that (until the wave got him too).

Pride is the undoing of the haughty. He spoke too soon indeed.

Pride goeth before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction

It was more of a big storm than Sauron thought, that one, and it swallowed him, too, for a while.
But not for so very long...

Hah! I can see it happening exactly like that. Love it!
