Fic Rec List: Celebrimbor by Zdenka
B2MeM Prompt and Path: Fanworks Recs: Favorite character (yellow path)
Format: rec list
Genre: (listed under each individual story; see below)
Rating: (see below)
Warnings: (see below)
Characters: Celebrimbor
Pairings: (see below)
Summary: A rec list with five fics featuring Celebrimbor. (In alphabetical order by author.)
Bringing Trouble to Barad-dur by chisscientist (Aiwen)
Format: novella (29,531 words)
Genre: gen, drama, humor
Rating: Teens
Warnings: mature themes, mild violence
Characters: Celebrimbor, Gil-galad, Sauron, Nazgûl, and others
Pairings: minor/background pairings
Summary: In the Halls of Mandos, Celebrimbor and Gil-galad receive a unique assignment: go as ghosts to Barad-dur and distract Sauron from his war against the free peoples of Middle-earth.
Note: This fic is also found on the SWG, but it’s not yet complete there.
This fic is utterly delightful crack. It makes me smile all the way through. And it manages to be crack while still feeling in-character! (If Celebrimbor were sent into Barad-dur as a ghost with limited telekinetic powers, I feel that going into Sauron’s torture chamber and sabotaging all the torture instruments by giving them metal fatigue is exactly what he would do.) Recommended for when you want a long fic that’s a fun distraction.
The Fall of Minas Tirith by Michiru
Format: short story (4853 words)
Genre: drama, gen
Rating: Adult
Warnings: graphic violence
Characters: Celebrimbor, Celegorm, Curufin, Orodreth
Pairings: Orodreth/Orodreth’s wife
Summary: In after days historians would forget much about the Dagor Bragollach, and many things were left out of the Quenta Silmarillion, written with the gift of hindsight. But the coming of Celegorm and Curufin to Nargothrond was at first held as the greatest fortune to come to the Noldor out of that battle, for by their aid alone did Orodreth survive the fall of Tol Sirion.
This is a very intense fic, which takes place in the midst of a desperate battle. But it’s not just an action sequence -- we’re always aware of the characters’ personal emotions, vengeance or sorrow or fear or love, and there are some very moving moments of connection between the characters. It’s from Orodreth’s point of view, and so we get his duty and loyalty towards his people, his fear for his family (including his infant son). I appreciate the competent and determined portrayal of Orodreth we get here. I also really like how the Fëanorians are written here, and there’s a great cameo of Huan in battle.
The Legacy of Love by Rhapsody
Format: fixed-length ficlet (270 words)
Genre: Angst, Character study, Drama, Gapfiller, Tragedy
Rating: PG
Warnings: referenced character death
Characters: Celebrimbor
Pairings: Curufin/Curufin’s wife (mentioned)
Summary: After having found his shelter on the isle of Balar, a messenger delivers a memory from the past.
I like this very much. It manages to be very emotionally effective in a short space. I like the implication of Celebrimbor carrying on the legacy of each of his parents, in his own way.
Moonshiners by Robinka
Format: short story (3015 words)
Genre: general, with a dash of (grim) humor
Rating: Teens
Warnings: alcohol; cursing; mature themes.
Characters: Túrin, Celebrimbor
Pairings: none
Summary: One evening, Celebrimbor receives an unexpected visitor, whom he engages in an alcohol-colored conversation.
I’m predisposed to like this story, since it was written for one of my prompts during B2MeM 2015. It makes total sense to me that a conversation between Túrin and Celebrimbor should take place with the help of large quantities of alcohol.
I love how Celebrimbor is still confident and competent when it comes to metalwork even when so drunk he can barely stand. He's kind of a mess in this, but I love him anyway. And poor Túrin, appropriately doom-filled and giving himself yet another ominous name. I like the dark humor in this piece, in places like this: “And I am doomed.” Mormegil sighed, unaffected by Tyelpo's outburst. “Even this sword hates me.”
Relief Mapping by swampdiamonds
Format: ficlet (896 words)
Genre: gen
Rating: General
Warnings: Author Chooses Not to Warn; content warning for a brief, offhand suicide reference.
Characters: Celebrimbor, Gwindor
Pairings: none
Summary: Gwindor and Celebrimbor have a chat.
This fic is understated but very effective -- it has a lot going on below the surface. I like the way both characters are written here. I won’t say any more because I think this fic is best appreciated on its own without preconceptions.

(one of the best parts of rec lists - finding the fic you couldn't remember the title/author of but REALLY want to read)
