Coirë (The Stirring)

The Tree is withered.

But see! A sapling blossoms.

Hope is come again.

Technically, when Aragorn and Gandalf find the sapling of the White Tree on the mountain-slopes above Minas Tirith it's Lairë (Summer),  [thanks, blslarner, for the correction!],  not Coirë (Stirring). Call it poetic license...

It's hardly terribly original: but it's got the right number of syllables, the nature reference, and the contrast of two images separated by punctuation - not that I was writing-by-Wikipedia-derived-numbers or anything... ;-)

I have always thought that a Haiku would be seriously hard to write. So much to say and so few words in which to say it! You did it wonderfully well.

In some ways it's quite liberating - even more so than a drabble - there's so little space that you have to pare down to almost nothing, so lots of subjects are out of the window before you start. Various ideas came and went and then the White Tree popped up, and seemed to work. Thank you!

Perfect look at the finding of the White Tree. But as Aragorn was crowned on May Day I find the dating odd.

Arrgh, you're absolutely right - not sure how I managed to mis-read that entry in HASA Resources, especially when I know the Coronation date perfectly well; that's what I get for posting things before breakfast! Thank you, I'll correct - will just have to stretch the poetic licence a bit further, that's all...

ETA: Oh my goodness, do you know what? I think I've just found an error in the Appendices! Appendix B has the date of Aragorn and Gandalf finding the sapling of the White Tree on the slopes of Mindolluin as being June 25th 3019. But it can't be June 25th, because the text of The Steward and the King (page 951 in my 1991 HarperCollins edition) says "...And Aragorn planted the new tree in the court by the fountain, and swiftly and gladly it began to grow: and when the month of June entered in it was laden with blossom."

So the date in Appendix B must be a misprint for May 25th, surely! (is slightly rocked on mental foundations...)

(and this isn't the first notation in the Book of Years that's proved wrong, or that JRRT chose to amend at a later time. After all, in the first editions, Elessar died on his 190th birthday rather than his 210th.)
