So Sauron's forces have taken to leaving these beasties as doorwardens whenever they defeat Dwarves, have they?
This is one possibility, and one I like! TBH, I'm leaving certain things in here a bit unexplained even to myself, and only have a vague notion of what might be going on around Gundabad. Part of this story's function is to serve to create a skeleton of certain 3rd age events I probably won't get around to addressing in depth for a lonnngg time.
I've been attempting to disperse POV among the characters somewhat evenly. Alatar was definitely due for a turn.
