You're definitely not the only one with that train of thought - I remember the first time reading the Silmarillion, and think I may have dropped it out of the tree I was sitting in at the time, quite in shock.
But thank you for the comment - the moral ambiguity was something I wanted to bring to the forefront. Even the Faithful (especially a double agent like Phazganôn) are human, and do harbour the possibility for awful actions.
