Format: Ficlet
Genre: Drama

Summary: Caranthir always followed his father’s lead and therefore hated Finarfin and his cousins. Will that continue in Middle Earth as well?
Family Ties
In all things, Caranthir followed the dictates of his father, Fëanor, who was both renowned and cursed, often with the same breath. Fëanor tolerated his half-brother Fingolfin, but hated his half-brother Finarfin. Perhaps this was due to Fëanor’s never-ending dislike of Indis, his Vanya stepmother who had taken his own mother’s place at Finwë’s side. Or perhaps it was because Finarfin reflected his mother in both appearance and attitude, being blond haired and a mild-mannered master of compromise. Whatever the reason, Fëanor’s complete dislike for the mother splashed fully upon her golden-haired son. Since his father turned his back whenever Finarfin entered the room or approached him on any matter, so also did Caranthir.
Standing with his brothers while listening to a report about Fingolfin’s followers who had recently arrived and set up camp at Lake Mithrim, Caranthir reflected on the years and distance between his youth in the West and his current position in Middle Earth. After his grandfather had been murdered in the hallway of Formenos, he had joined his brothers, speaking the Oath first voiced by his father, the words of which would doom them all forever more. He had shed blood at the quays of Alqualondë, almost drowned in the ships while crossing to Losgar, and had finally thrown a torch onto the planking of his ship, condemning it to a watery grave in a flourish of flame. Then his father, the lodestone of his life, had been slain by the servants of Melkor, the second of the house of Finwë to enter Mandos’ Halls, but not the last.
Listening to the report about the survivors of the Grinding Ice, Caranthir had breathed a sigh of relief when he remembered that Finarfin had not made the crossing. Fëanor’s youngest brother had turned aside when hearing Mandos' speech, returning to Tirion and taking up the Kingship that his brothers had left in shards in the darkness behind them. But Caranthir's stomach roiled when he heard that his cousins had made the crossing and were among the ranks of the half-frozen survivors who now lived on the northern banks of Lake Mithrim. All five of Finarfin’s children, Finrod, Galadriel, Orodreth, Angrod and Aegnor had continued on to Middle Earth, walking through the Grinding Ice. He need have no further contact with the father, but Finarfin’s children would ever be a thorn in his side.
“Why did they not just turn aside when Finarfin did?” he asked his brother Celegorm. “Why did they continue on to a land where they knew they would not be welcomed by us?”
Celegorm, who usually was more concerned with the latest hunt or the newest horse, turned around and looked at his younger brother in surprise. “What does it matter what our cousins did? Finarfin turned aside. Our father's nemesis still resides in the West and is not here.”
“Mark my words, brother,” Caranthir responded with a sneer. “Our futures will be tied tightly into those of Finarfin's get, for better or for worse.”
Many years later, after their lands had been overrun by Morgoth and they entered Nargothrond to request asylum from Finrod, Celegorm remembered the words of Caranthir and shivered.
A/N – To make things a bit easier, I decided to use the Sindarin forms of all of the names for cohesiveness in such a short story, even though the time frames pull from the West through to Middle Earth and the names should be a combination of Quenya and Sindarin instead.
