Summary: Pippin has lots of questions after a trip to the barn.
“Merry! Help!” Pippin shouted. He was running in circles and waving his hands about. “The poor kitty! Merry it’s bad! It’s real bad! Do something!”
Merry hurried over and the six-year-old child fell into his arms and wrapped himself around his older cousin hiding his face against Merry’s jacket.
“Pip, what is it? What’s wrong? Did you get hurt?” Merry asked, trying to pry the child loose so he could look at him to be certain that he wasn’t injured.
“No, not me,” Pippin wailed. “The kitty! It's hurt. There are rats.”
Fearing the worst, Merry picked up his younger cousin, who was still holding onto him for dear life, and made his way to the far end of the barn. He knew that Pippin had been playing with the barn cats earlier and that the cats favoured the back stall of the barn. It was where their food was and it gave the cats a place to hide.
“The poor, poor, kitty,” Pippin whimpered.
“Let go of me so I can see the cat, Pip,” Merry said. "If you want me to help it, I have put you down now." When the child continued to cling to him, Merry made his voice stern and said, “Let go this instant. Stop being a baby.”
Pippin let go at once and stood looking at Merry. After a minute, the younger lad slid his hand into Merry’s and the two of them walked into the stall at the back of the barn.
Pippin tightened his grip on Merry’s hand once they came within sight of the big, yellow, barn cat that Merry’s mum called Butter.
“The poor kitty is in trouble, Merry. She’s got rats coming out of her,” Pippin said in a shaky voice.
Merry grinned. “No she doesn’t. She’s having babies. Those are her baby kittens.”
Pippin peered at Butter intently and then said, “Merry, how did she get all of those kittens up in there? Does that hurt Butter? How many kittens will fit into one cat, Merry? When will she stop doing that? Merry, is she going to be all right? Are you sure those aren‘t rats? Butter is having the ugliest kitties ever! What do we do, Merry?”
Merry stammered for a minute, trying to decide where to begin and then he pulled Pippin along quickly, leading the child out of the barn.
Pippin was surprised, but he allowed himself to be led away from the confusing sight.
The first person the two lads saw as they fled the barn, was Pippin’s older sister, Pearl. Merry proceeded to push Pippin toward her. As Pearl looked at him in confusion she said, “What has he done now?”
“Explain the miracle of birth to your brother. You live on a farm. Someone needs to talk to him about stuff,” Merry instructed. “Or keep him out of our barn and away from our cats!” With that, he hurried away as if someone might be chasing him.
