He had always been good with women. Mothers and daughters, nieces and aunts, he could always charm his way through to what he wanted with them. It was only natural that he approach this important task in the old, unfailing way.
He found the mother in the garden. Flashing his best, most winsome smile, he said, "Good day, Mrs. Daisy!" and hurried to lift a sack of potatoes onto the wheelbarrow.
"Why, but if it isn't Peregrin Took! Again. What brings you to these parts today?"
Here goes. Deep breath. "I'm here to persuade your husband to part with Diamond..."
