A Perfect Day

Nerdanel ran lightly, cresting the ridge of the last sand dune before the shore and heading for the sea cave nestled in the small and quiet cove ahead. Behind her followed her pack – her sons - egged on by her husband. She heard their laughter as they were driven over the dune by the false animalistic growls of their father. “Catch me,” she laughingly taunted and began racing in earnest down the face of the dune with sure feet. The day was warm and the sea was calm and turquoise blue. The darkness of the cave opening beckoned irresistibly.

As she slipped into the cave's darkness she immediately moved to the side, hiding in plain sight. The first to come in was Carnistir, followed closely by Tyelkormo. Macalaurë then entered leading Curufinwë by the hand and finally Maitimo walked in holding the twins in his arms.

Carnistir and Tyelkormo started to shout, listening for the echoes of their voices to bounce off the high roof above them, Curufinwë began walking towards the back of the cave where he saw some phosphorescent stones embedded in the wall, and Macalaurë and Maitimo each held one of the twins who were splashing their feet in the cave’s tidal pool and having fun listening to the echoes of their laughter.

Fëanáro came through the entryway and moved to the side next to Nerdanel, putting his arm around her waist. “They're good boys,” he said. She nodded and leaned in to him while he tightened his hold around her.

“Look at all of the bats up there, Macalaurë,” Maitimo said, pointing out a moving carpet of the creatures hanging from the rough stones of the roof at the back of the cave.

“Curufinwë, get back here before you go trudging through bat guano,” Fëanáro called out.

“But I just want to see the stones, Atar,” was the response.

Fëanáro sighed. Giving his wife a quick kiss on the cheek, he left to entrap son number five and keep him from the variety of nasty things that would usually be found crawling around in bat guano. Shortly afterwards, a shriek followed by a child’s laughter was heard as Fëanáro caught up with Curufinwë. Grabbing him around his waist, he swung him around in a circle before walking back to the pond with him tucked under his arm. Curufinwë’s arms and legs were flailing unsuccessfully against his father’s iron grip.

Fëanáro was walking back with his son when he stopped short, leaned down for a moment picking something off the sandy flooring, and then continued. “Wash this one off for me would you please,” he said as he dropped Curufinwë in front of Maitimo who laughingly took the boy and waded into the pool with him.

“We should probably head back, my love,” Nerdanel said. Our picnic should be set out and waiting for us by now.

“Just so,” was her husband’s response. He turned from her and looking at their sons playing in the tide pool, called out “Time to go, boys. Make sure we are leaving the cave the way it was before we entered it. Dinner is waiting for us and the last one there won’t get chocolate cake.”

His last words spurred everyone into action. In record time Nerdanel was leading her troops back to where their picnic dinner awaited them.

Just then Tyelkormo shouted “Mother, look. Mushrooms. Are they edible?”

“Are you fond of mushrooms, my dear?” she asked as she walked to where he had pointed. In the meantime her husband went to Maitimo, taking one of the twins from his arms.

Nerdanel looked carefully at the mushroom patch her son had discovered. They were nestled in a portion of rotted tree in a shady spot away from the salt water and looked to be common mushrooms.

“Yes mother, I love mushrooms cut up and fried in butter,” her son answered enthusiastically.

“Well then, you may harvest some of these and we will take them back to Cook. If she says that they are safe, you may have some for your breakfast tomorrow.”

Shortly all of them arrived at the blanket spread out for their evening picnic. As the mingling happened and the light changed to the silver glow of Telperion, Nerdanel leaned into her husband’s arms as her children talked quietly nearby.

“We did well, didn’t we?” she said softly.

“No one could have done better,” was his response, and he kissed her and tightened his arms around her. He fumbled in his pocket for something, coming out with a seashell that he had strung onto a leather cord. Dangling it in front of her eyes, he savored her reaction.

“Oh Fëanáro, it’s truly lovely. Is that a natural hole in the shell?”

“It is a natural hole. It’s a gift from the sea and our cave for my favorite wife,” and while she laughed gently, he tied the shell around her neck. Then, replacing his arms around her waist, he sighed, contented, as her body once again relaxed against his.

In later years the five older children would look back on that magical day fondly. They remembered it as one of the last times that their parents were lovingly entwined as a couple and the entire family was together and not arguing. The memory of that one day at the sea cave was an anchor of the love that they had received from their parents; a memory that they cherished while the tidal forces of their futures tore them apart.
