As they travelled towards Rivendell and the Last Homely House Thorin Oakenshield considered his companions. From his nephews Fili and Kili who he knew well from watching them grow through to his more distant relations Óin, Glóin, Balin and Dwalin. Then there were the other dwarves Dori, Ori & Nori, and Bifur, Bofur & Bombur. He knew all of them and indeed was their ruler in the Blue Mountains to which the Dwarves of Durins’ Folk had retreated after the loss of the Lonely Mountain in 2770 when Smaug attacked their kingdom. Now the time was right to return to recover what had been lost at least so he had been told by Gandalf who had come to him with a secret map. Not that he knew where it had come from.

It was the fourteenth member of their party who was of concern to Thorin – the ‘burglar’ Bilbo Baggins. He seemed an unlikely fellow to be able to do what Gandalf said he could – more interested in his food than in adventure or lost kingdoms. But Gandalf saw something in the hobbit and so Thorin had been persuaded. Maybe in the end it would turn out for the best.

Bilbo himself at that moment pointed to something in the sky – a hawk flying free over the lands on a hunt. “At least he has good eyes” thought Thorin. He could see that the hobbit was following the progress of the hawk as best as he could while guiding his pony along the rough road. He had proved that before now spotting animals moving before any of the dwarves could. This gave Thorin hope for the future and he too watched the hawk on its wing as it flew onwards in its hunt till at last he faded from sight.
