Well, I guess he just makes a very poignant appearance - illustrating the conflicting loyalties and the confusion many NĂºmenoreans may have experienced. He certainly shows that it's not just the "inherently wicked" who follow Sauron, but that the "good" and idealistic could get sucked in just as well. We just see him briefly, but it's clear he's basically a decent guy who's just living in difficult times - so I think it's easy to feel with him and for him. I was kind of worried he wouldn't be able to live with himself, now that he's broken his oaths and doesn't know what or who to turn to. So it's a bit of a relief to know that he finds an open ear with Kharun. Even though it doesn't ultimately make a difference! As you say, it just matters what they do before the end.
