Okay, here's the thing:
Even though there aren't nearly as insanely many fics posted for this year's B2MeM as there were during the Bingo madness, it's still all too likely that I (like everyone else) missed out on some good stuff – either because we lacked time at some point, or because we stuck predominantly to our comfort zone, or for whatever other reasons.
As it's a lot of bother going back through the (150!) entries that have been posted, or even just to click one's way through the title summaries, I figured that a good way of helping others to find things they might have missed are rec posts. That way, it's easier to find the best stuff! Yes, of course such a list is always going to be biased by personal tastes – but hey, at least it can help people to go "Oh yes, I know that XYZ and I have similar tastes, so if s/he liked that, I should check it out." Right? Right!
So I hope this is going only to be the first rec post, and that the rest of you are going to share your favourites in like manner. After all, my list is hardly going to be comprehensive. :D
So here go...
Lyra's Favourites
in vaguely chronological order of content (where possible)
Silmarillion-based
Ainulindalë by Dwimordene
Poetic, multiple-drabblish look at the Themes of the Ainulindalë with a focus on Melkor and Nienna.
[Drabble series]
The Beautiful Ones by Elleth
A fascinating story about Indis and her betrothed Kalrê back in the Cuiviénen days, including (but not limited to) Primitive Elvish dirty talk and other linguistic (re-)contructions, anthropology of the early Eldar, mammoths and dinosaurs.
[Chaptered; linguistic heavyweight]
The Cliff and the Ice by Tehta
It's totally not what it sounds like, even though it is about Maedhros and Fingon... and about cliffs and ice. - Two cousins go on a rock-climbing expedition in Valinor.
[Ficlet]
Love is a Risky Business (Chapter 1); Love is a Risky Business (Chapter 2)
Fingon and Maedhros discover their love for each other, but love isn't always easy.
[Chaptered; Slash]
In the Bleak and Early Morn by Elleth (also at the SWG
Maglor's wife confronts her husband about the Kinslaying, their relationship, and the future.
[Short Story]
The Glory in Glorious by Himring (also at the SWG
The Noldor in Middle-earth share a moment of victory and triumph after the Dagor Aglareb.
[Ficlet]
Heart-stung by Zeen
Episodes from Maedhros' and Fingon's friendship, from the end to the beginning.
[Short Story]
Spring came late that year by Himring
Maedhros sees so many people in Elrond that it's hard to focus on the present.
[Vignette]
Hand over Fist by Zeen (also on the AO3)
The work of Maedhros' hand(s).
[Episodic ficlet]
Profanation by Dwimordene
Númenor towards the end – as seen by an OFC from the colonies in Harad. Featuring an intriguing new (for me) look at Sauron's purposes.
[Short Story]
In the Last Hour by Zdenka
What Tar-Míriel experiences in the day and night after the armada has left for Aman.
[Short Story]
Let the Star Rise by Zdenka
In the Second Age, Celebrimbor makes a symbolic decision.
[Drabble]
Lords of the West by Marta
Olwë and Fingolfin work together on resolving the past.
[Short Story]
The Fallen by Dawn Felagund (also at the SWG)
As a young poet in training, Anairë learns about the importance of loss; millennia later, she witnesses the reembodiment of Finrod.
[Short Story]
Hobbit or Lord of the Rings-based
Taking the Bruise by Himring
Celebrían decides to go to Valinor.
[Short Story]
Deal With It and Keep Walking by Dreamflower
Sam realises that there is no return from his and Frodo's journey.
[Ficlet]
Still Standing by Alma Heart
Even at home with his wife, Mablung can't leave the war behind.
[Ficlet]
Eye of the Beholder by Lbilover
Frodo considers the beauty of Minas Tirith.
[Ficlet]
The Days of the King by Marta
Aragorn's coronation from Faramir's perspective; uplifting with a touch of sadness
[Short Story]
Grace Bestowed by Linda Hoyland
At the end of his life, Aragorn says farewell to the White Tree.
[Ficlet]
Art
Alasse's responses to various prompts; movie-inspired but with a very clear-cut personal style
Dwarves in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears by Oshun
Poetry
Back to Lands You Once Did Know by Dreamflower
Boromir's last journey
And last but not least, pretty much all the responses to the second Wildcard Day challenge, Stop and smell the athelas. From innocent and light-hearted to heart-wrenching and powerful, it's a great cross-section of the different ways that brought "us" here.
(For reasons of practicality, I'm just linking to all the non-fiction/essay responses. Most of them are Athelas Wildcard responses; one is Dreamflower's essay on whether Frodo would be counted among the Wise, which is also well-worth reading.)
A big thank you to all of you who wrote such great stories and made this another very special March for me! *hugs*
First time I'm doing one of them Rec posts, so if I've left out any vital information, please bear with me.
[Mods: I hope it's ok that I created a new tag for this year's recommendations; we had one last year so I assumed it was all right.]
Right! Next, please! :D
