As for the cornflowers (which simply are among my favourite summer flowers ;)), a note Tolkien left on his sketch of Idril's heraldry does say 'Idril's Device. The "Cornflower" pattern Menelluin. Origin of (often debased) Númenorean circular patterns', which I've taken to suggest that it was a very popular motif in Númenor. I deliberately deviated from the exact form of Idril's pattern (OR the Númenorean tiles!) a bit, but nonetheless, good catch! :)
(Great. Now I'm wondering whether Khibil would know about the cornflower being Idril's device, or not so much. I mean, she's a botanist, so she knows all kinds of stuff about plants, but I wonder whether cultural history is part of her repertoire...)
