Whoah! This is really great. I am way into your vision of Mairon as not simply inherently evil, but led, and perhaps driven, astray. The poignant moments juxtaposed against the grisly ones are quite effective. This (along with your other stories about the Second Age) is a welcome illumination of a time and place that hasn't been explored much -- reading these feels like an expedition to a big empty part of the map that turns out to have so many interesting features!
[ETA:] Huin! Your artwork is awesome. That's totally the facial expression I would have imagined for Mairon at points of this story, and I love the "Thundersnow" image -- so unexpected from you, but so great! Bleak and sad and scary all at once.
[ETA #2:] I see that Dawn hit the juxtaposition nail on the head, above, much better than I did... yeah, juxtaposition. Cool. What she said.
