This is poignant and lovely, suffused with a mood of sadness, yes, but also with acceptance and hope. I particularly like the way the flashback scenes link in with the present: the smell of fresh bread in memory leading to Elladan offering Halbarad bread in the present, and so on. And when Halbarad refuses the bread, because it should be left for those with a future who will need it later...! What a telling moment, that says so much about the sort of man he is.
