This story makes me wonder why I don't stop and read hobbits more often, or this period, when the heroes of the war were slowly taking their leave, as heroes must. It was so beautiful and so achingly real to anyone who has lost a relative to old age. The wisdom, the kindnesses, the fear even, wrapped themselves around my heart, and I loved that at the end Eomer took control back of his life and rode out to meet his friend as he would have done in younger days. I'm not the only reviewer to have been in tears (in a good way) at the end. The swallow was a thread that carried through from beginning to end perfectly. Also loved the use of the Bede anecdote.
