While Aragorn is travelling during his time as Thorongil (it's likely he'd use a different alias in Rhun, Khand, or Harad, though), he meets up with Gandalf, who is likewise travelling. They share an adventure. (This can be an adventure they have together among the Men of the place they're in, one can relate the tale of such an adventure to the other, they can trade stories, or perhaps it's even on the Quest that they share the story/stories of their sojourns with the rest of the Fellowship, whether they crossed paths in the South and East or not.) Rating doesn't matter.

I'd love a story set in an Avarin realm in the East or South, exploring the history, culture and politics of the place. I don't quite hold with Tolkien's descriptions that anywhere east or south was primitive and benighted, so an influential, powerful realm would be wonderful to see. If you'd like to tell this through the eyes of a canon character, there are plenty of options; Alatar and Pallando, Sauron, Maglor, Aragorn all come to mind - or anybody who might have reasons to travel. Maybe Aragorn and Arwen travel east or south for peace treaties after the Ring War and subsequent Gondorian conquests, maybe Maglor simply follows the coastline to get him there, maybe Sauron tries to sway the Avari to his side while he extends his influence (similar to Eregion later; whether or not he succeeds is up to the writer though I'd prefer if the story weren't gory or violent). Original characters simply going about their day are just as fine, bonus points for a strong female presence and/or femslash in the story.

I will give this a try, probably with Maglor and a Avari group. I really like your idea that everything in the east isn't necessarily primitive. Maybe it just isn't well known. I like that a lot!

I know the Orientalist paintings are under attack at the moment as not particularly politically correct, but I find their exotic and romantic character suitable to fantasy imaginings related to "the East and South, such as Rhûn, Umbar, and Khand." Is she a spy? Good or bad?

Maybe a young Imrahil of Dol Amroth met this woman and was attracted to her? Or if one wants a more woman-centered plot, perhaps Ivriniel encountered her through some of Dol Amroth's connections, trade or politics, to farther-flung areas of Middle-earth.

Queen Berúthiel, Tolkien says, came from an inland city in Umbar and returned there after Tarannon Falastur ended their political marriage and banished her. She's called "nefarious, solitary and loveless" in the texts, but what if there were good reason for her resentment - such as a forced separation from the woman she loved? And what would her return and life after have been like - did they find each other again and get their happy ending?

Yes, thank you! And it's exactly that, I'd say - the region is too vast to simply be some languishing backwater all over, and especially comparing real-world Asian history it's also just plain untrue. *bounce* I'm so looking forward to the fills coming in! :D

I kind of accidentally planned out a story in response to this prompt during the course of 20 mile walk today.
