I like this! It's made me think, which is always good. When I first read LotR as a child, I completely failed to notice that Merry, Pippin and Frodo are distinctly "upper-class," clearly independently wealthy. With our modern egalitatian viewpoint, we might not want the issue of class to be there, but there it is; Sam is often referred to as Frodo's "servant," after all - although of course he turns out to be so much more. Nice to see the early seeds of that here.
