I had almost that precise reaction to Tom; dislike, and then he grew on me gradually and now I just love him. Although as I mentioned to Oshun upthread, I still wouldn't want to be in a room with him for very long. I'm too grouchy to prosper for long in the presence of that type of high-energy persona, lol.
I must confess I didn't pay as much mind to Goldberry before. It was good to have this prompt make me think about and appreciate her more.
Characters like these are one of the reasons the Legendarium is such a great arena for ficcishness, IMHO; the author gives us just enough to work with, but not so much detail that we can't go wild with our own interpretations.
