I think it hurt Frodo to tell this story, but that it was a hurt that in the end helped him heal. And I'm certain that each saw the other as the hero he was without admitting they both needed to follow through for the quest to be successful.
Yes, the children of Brandy Hall are beginning to appreciate that their own troubles weren't necessarily the worst anyone endured.
