This was delightful! Somehow, I've never been bothered by the chain-through-the-ring question - I was assuming that he kept it on the chain whenever he wasn't wearing it, but would take it off the chain when putting it on, which would only be in special circumstances so he'd remember to be extra-careful in case it was feeling naughty - but now I do notice this doesn't quite add up. Now I do wonder how that works. Huh! Anyway, I really loved Merry and Pippin's light-hearted shenanigans. So many funny lines! And then, in the last paragraph, you pack such a punch and suddenly, nothing is light-hearted and funny anymore. Very effective!
